On this day in history...

1870: Author Charles Dickens died at age 58.

So Charles Dickens death is not as exciting as Mark Wahlberg's birthday. BUT, his stories became the basis of a lot of movies. Here are two titles that were made and remade (and are available in our home use collection).

Great Expectations (1946) - HU DVD 4777
Great Expectations (1998) - HU DVD 3962

Oliver Twist (1948) - HU DVD 633
Oliver Twist (2005) - HU DVD 1773

1973 Secretariat became horse racing's first Triple Crown winner in 25 years by winning the Belmont Stakes.

Horse racing. Frankly, I get more excited about wearing a large hat than I do about the actual horses. Never the less, here are some movies or or centered around horse racing.

Charlie Chan at the race track
- HU DVD 4002
A day at the races - HU DVD 3415
The first Saturday in May - DVD 4365
Seabiscuit - DVD 1176
Shadow of the thin man - HU DVD 4974

1980: Comedian Richard Pryor suffered near-fatal burns at his home when a mixture of "free-base" cocaine exploded.

I couldn't help but post this fun fact. Get your friends together and come watch this 1982 film here in Media Services.
