It's cute and cuddly for the kids, but it's also real science.
The idea is to attach cameras to animals to see what they do when we aren't around. New technology is quickly expanding this form of wildlife research. See video shot by animals themselves. By the way, the exhibit at the National Geographic Museum features a house cat (wearing a videocam) who is let out at night to terrorize the local rodents. The video shows the cat catching and eating a large rat, then returning home to the loving embrace of its human family. Lovely.
